As the homeowner, you’ll need to be actively involved, especially at the start of the project, to communicate your requirements to the general contractor. To ensure your garage meets your needs and delivers value, it’s always beneficial to plan ahead. There are several key aspects to consider during the planning stage:
1. Garage Size:

Consider the number and size of vehicles you plan to park in your future garage. This crucial step will help determine the appropriate garage dimensions. For larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, we recommend measuring your vehicle to ensure it fits comfortably. As a guideline, allow at least 2'–6" of clearance between the vehicle and any side obstacles. For example, a 24' extended garage is ideal for trucks, providing enough space to walk around easily. If you plan to park a trailer, consider higher ceilings and wide overhead doors to accommodate its height and width.
2. Storage/Working Space:

Will you need extra storage or a workstation in your garage? Are you planning to work on projects, pursue a hobby, or simply store tools and do minor repairs? If so, consider designing your garage to include overhead storage, a desk, or a row of cabinets. Think about the equipment you’ll use or store — you may need additional lighting for work areas and extra electrical outlets for tools or machinery. Some equipment might even require an upgraded sub-panel.
If you’re unsure where to start, our team can help. We’ll work with you to maximize your garage’s functionality, ensuring it meets your needs now and in the future.
3. Permitting:

Are you planning to handle permits yourself, or would you prefer to hire an expert? The permitting process can be confusing and time-consuming, especially if it’s your first time. You’ll need to provide a site plan showing the location of your future garage, and for larger or more complex structures, engineer drawings and specifications may also be required. Be sure to check the city’s requirements before applying to ensure you meet all criteria.
At Corsac Construction, we work closely with the City of Calgary and surrounding municipalities to handle permits and inspections on your behalf. With our team, you can have peace of mind knowing that all requirements are met and your project stays compliant from start to finish.
4. Finishes:

In Calgary, we’re fortunate to experience all four seasons, which means garages can get very hot in summer and cold in winter. Proper insulation makes a big difference — we can add an insulation layer and vapour barrier to your garage walls for year-round comfort and convenience. Ask our Corsac team about this upgrade.
We also offer drywall and painting services to give your garage a finished, polished interior. Adding hangers, hooks, and shelves can further enhance storage and organization. A neat, functional interior not only adds aesthetic value but also makes your garage more comfortable and efficient.
Think about how you plan to use your garage — every garage can be customized to fit your needs. With careful planning, you can avoid regrets and enjoy a space you’ll be proud of. If you’re unsure about your options, call us at 403-619-1016 to schedule a consultation.
